A Holter monitor is a small device that records your heart's electrical activity for 24 to 48 hours to devise a correct treatment plan. This battery-operated monitoring tool helps our cardiologists identify cardiac irregularities when patients experience unexplained symptoms.
Your healthcare provider may suggest this test to diagnose an arrhythmia, monitor heartbeat patterns, identify causes of palpitations or dizziness, assess oxygen flow to the heart, and determine medication effectiveness.
During an office visit, small electrodes are attached to your chest that connect to the monitor, with possible chest shaving beforehand. You wear the device continuously for 24 or 48 hours while maintaining normal activities, though bathing, swimming, or using any devices that may interfere with the electrical activity should be avoided. Documenting your symptoms during monitoring is recommended. The device is then removed at a follow-up appointment for data analysis.
The monitor identifies heart rhythm abnormalities and electrical irregularities. Based on findings, our cardiologists discuss treatment options or recommend additional diagnostic testing to address underlying cardiac concerns.
