Arterial Doppler Studies

A non-invasive ultrasound study that measures blood flow and pressure in the arteries of your arms and legs.

What It Is

An arterial Doppler uses sound waves to evaluate how blood is moving through the arteries in your limbs. The study helps identify narrowing, blockages, or reduced circulation that can contribute to pain, numbness, or slow-healing wounds.

How It's Performed

You lie comfortably while our technologist applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a probe along the arteries of your arms or legs. Blood pressure cuffs may be placed at several levels to calculate pressure differences between segments of the limb. The exam is painless and typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

What It Detects

Arterial Dopplers can identify peripheral arterial disease, quantify the severity of blockages, evaluate arterial aneurysms, assess circulation before or after a procedure, and monitor the function of bypass grafts or stents.

Who Benefits

The study is especially helpful for patients with leg pain while walking, cold or discolored feet, non-healing ulcers, or known cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, or high blood pressure.
